The New Year; it’s that time when many of us look forward to putting away the Christmas decorations, deciding on those new year’s resolutions (ahem!) and making some exciting plans for the year ahead.
If you’re planning home improvements this year, the chances are you’ll be hoping to start your project as soon as you can.
However big or small your plans are, make sure you take a look at some of the properties that were nominated for the RIBA House of the Year 2017 award for ideas – there were some incredible and inspirational buildings on the shortlist. The two buildings that really grabbed my attention though were ‘Hidden House’ and ‘Newhouse of Auchengree’, which both cleverly combine novel building materials with acres of glass to make the most of their very unique settings.
Small, but perfectly formed, Hidden House nestles within a confined urban space in London and uses an ingenious mix of glazing with slim sightlines and flat rooflights to open up the space and allow maximum light to pour in.
At the other end of the scale is the enormous Newhouse of Auchengree. This rural gem, surrounded by fields in North Ayrshire, mixes agricultural cladding with huge aluminium framed windows to soak up the views of the beautiful rolling countryside and shield the building from the elements. I can feel the call of the wild just looking at this place…
For our own homes, we can certainly take inspiration from these RIBA House of the Year award finalists. The common theme that runs through all of these projects is that the architects remained loyal to their vision, without compromising on their choice of materials.
So, whether you’re starting on an ambitious self-build, adding an extension or re-modelling an existing space, it’s worth taking this architects tip; concentrate on the fabric of your building – elements like the windows, doors, walls and floors. These are what people see first and they’re not so easy to change in the future, so spend time researching your materials and invest in the best quality components that you can. Stay true to your vision and you won’t go far wrong.
